Puppy Vet Prep Lessons

Why is it important to prepare your puppy for the vet?

Puppyhood is a stage of learning and development for dogs. From the moment they come into this world, dogs start learning how to feel, think, and behave. Between 0 to 8 weeks, they begin the socialization process with their mother and littermates, but when you bring home your furry bundle of joy at 8 weeks, the torch passes to you. It is now your responsibility to continue their education about the world. This means teaching them how to feel comfortable in the environments they are likely to encounter in their lifetimes. Don’t wait until it’s too late!

The critical socialization window for puppies is between 6 and 16 weeks. After 16 weeks, new stimuli are met with suspicion and apprehension rather than curiosity. Once your puppy or dog is displaying signs of fear you will have much more work on your hands to undo the learned fearfulness. The best way to keep your dog from becoming fearful or aggressive is prevention!

One environment every dog will experience from time to time is a veterinary clinic. It is important to condition our puppies to be comfortable with the sights, sounds, smells, and handling that occurs at the vet, so that they will learn to tolerate this often overwhelming and intimidating environment.

The good news is that there are steps we as guardians can take to ensure our animals are comfortable and at ease when they step into the vet office for check-ups, shots, and grooming. With this training package, you will be guided through the processes of socialization and positive conditioning, and your dog will learn skills that make vet trips safer and less stressful for everyone—dogs, vets, and guardians!
